Instagram Story Likes: Can the Owner See Who Liked Their Story?

Only the owner can see who liked an Instagram Story. See where Story likes appear, how they differ from replies and reactions, and what happens after 48 hours.

Yes, the owner can see who liked their Story, and only the owner can. Instagram says “only the person who shared the story can see your like.” There is no public like count on Stories, and a like is not sent as a DM.

So the answer to “who can see Instagram Story likes” is one account: the one that posted the Story. The sections below explain where that like shows up, how it compares with replies, reactions and comments, and what changes after 48 hours.

How a Story Like Works

When you watch a Story, a heart icon sits next to the reply bar. Tapping it likes the Story. Tapping it again removes the like.

Instagram’s Help Center describes this as the way to like someone’s Story, and it states plainly that the like is visible only to the person who shared the Story.

When Instagram introduced Story likes in February 2022, Adam Mosseri described them as private: they have no public counts, and they are not sent as a DM. That design keeps likes out of the poster’s message inbox.

Where the Owner Sees Your Like

The owner sees likes in the Story viewer list. Instagram says the poster can see the number and the usernames of the people who viewed each photo or video in their Story, for up to 48 hours after posting.

When a viewer has liked the Story, a heart appears next to that person’s name in the list. The like is not shown in a separate public place; it sits alongside the named view.

A like also means you viewed

You cannot like a Story without opening it. Anyone who likes a Story is already in the viewer list as a named viewer, so the heart only adds a signal to an entry that exists anyway.

Instagram Plus adds one open question. Its Story Preview feature lets subscribers peek at a Story without appearing in the viewer list, but Instagram does not document whether liking or otherwise interacting during Preview reveals you. Do not assume a like stays hidden.

Rewatching and liking are separate as well. The viewer list is a list of accounts, not a log of plays, and our guide to whether someone can see how many times you viewed their Story explains the replay side.

Story Likes vs. Replies, Reactions, Comments and Super Hearts

A like is the quietest way to interact with a Story. Other interactions reach the poster in different places, and one of them is visible to other viewers.

Replies

Typing in the reply bar sends a message to the poster’s DMs. It starts or continues a private conversation with the poster.

Quick emoji reactions

Quick emoji reactions also go to the poster’s DMs. They feel similar to a like, but they land in the inbox instead of only appearing as a heart in the viewer list.

Story comments

Story comments, reported as launching in September 2024, are different from both likes and replies. They are visible to others who can see the Story, which makes them the least private of these options.

Super Hearts

Instagram Plus subscribers can send Super Hearts, which Instagram describes as animated hearts that “stand out in their inbox.” A regular Story like is quiet by design, while a Super Heart is built to be noticed. Instagram says included Plus benefits may vary.

Can Anyone Else See Who Liked a Story?

No. Other viewers, followers and people on the poster’s Close Friends list cannot see Story likes. Instagram’s wording is direct: only the person who shared the Story can see your like.

There is also no public like count. A Story does not display a number of hearts to the people watching it.

The viewer list itself is private to the poster. Instagram says “only you are able to look at who’s seen your story,” so the hearts in that list are not shown to anyone else either.

Does Instagram Notify the Owner When You Like a Story?

Sources disagree, and Instagram does not settle it. Some how-to articles from 2022 say the owner receives a notification for a Story like, while other guides say no notification is sent. As of September 2026, Instagram’s Help Center does not document a separate “liked your story” notification.

What is documented matters more. The owner can see your like in the viewer list regardless of notifications, as a heart next to your username.

So treat a Story like as something the poster can see, not as a secret signal. Whether or not an alert appears on their phone, the heart is in their list for as long as the viewer data lasts.

Removing a Like

Tapping the heart again unlikes the Story and removes the heart next to your name. Your name stays in the viewer list, because you still viewed the Story.

Instagram does not document whether a notification the owner may already have seen disappears after you unlike. If the poster checked the viewer list while the heart was there, unliking cannot change what they already saw.

What Happens to Story Likes After 48 Hours

Viewer data for a Story is available for up to 48 hours after posting. For hours 24 to 48, the owner reaches it through their Archive. After that, the named viewer list is gone, and the hearts next to names go with it.

Instagram does not document any other named record of Story likes after that window.

Likes and Story Insights

Public personal accounts and Professional accounts get Story Insights, which are aggregate numbers with no usernames. The Story Insights help page lists an Interactions metric covering “replies, shares, sticker taps, link taps and other engagement metrics.”

Likes are not named in that description. Instagram does not document whether Story likes are counted inside Interactions, so do not assume a like total appears there.

Either way, Insights never show who liked a Story. They are numbers only, available for up to two years, and private accounts do not get Story Insights at all.

Close Friends Story Likes

A like on a Close Friends Story follows the same rule as any other Story: only the person who shared it can see the like. Other people on the list do not see who liked it.

This is where many people get confused, because Close Friends Reels work differently. Instagram says that if someone on the list likes, comments on or shares a Close Friends Reel, “others on your close friends list will be able to see their username and how they interact with your reel.”

So a heart on a Close Friends Story stays between you and the poster, while a like on a Close Friends Reel can be seen by other members. Our guide on viewing Instagram Close Friends Stories anonymously explains why people outside the list cannot open those Stories at all.

Story Likes vs. Post and Reel Likes

Likes on feed Posts and Reels have their own privacy setting. Under “Likes you’ve made,” you can choose who sees the Posts and Reels you liked: everyone, people you follow, close friends, or no one.

Instagram adds that “regardless of your setting choice, the account that posted the content you liked can see that you liked their post or reel.” The setting controls what other people see, not what the poster sees.

Instagram describes that setting for Posts and Reels. Story likes are already limited to the poster, so in every case (Story, Post or Reel) the person who posted the content can see that you liked it.

Liking a Story vs. Viewing Anonymously

Liking is an identified action. You have to be logged in to an Instagram account to tap the heart, and the like is attached to your username in the owner’s viewer list.

That is the opposite of anonymous viewing. An anonymous Instagram Story viewer does not ask you to log in to Instagram, works with public accounts only, and cannot like, reply to or react to a Story on your behalf.

If your goal is to watch a public Story without your name appearing, any interaction defeats that goal. A reply, emoji reaction or Super Heart identifies you to the poster, and a Story comment can identify you to other viewers as well.

Quick Checklist for Story Posters

If you post Stories and want to know who liked them, keep these points in mind:

  • Check the viewer list, not your inbox. Story likes appear as hearts next to names, not as messages.
  • Check within 48 hours. After that window, the named list and its hearts are no longer available.
  • Expect replies and reactions in messages. Those arrive in your DMs, separate from likes.
  • Do not expect names in Insights. Story Insights for public accounts are aggregate numbers only.
  • Know the Close Friends difference. Likes on your Close Friends Stories stay private to you; interactions on Close Friends Reels are visible to other members.
  • Hide your Story from specific accounts if needed. In the “Story, live and location” settings, or from the options next to a name in the viewer list, you can hide future Stories from someone. Instagram notes this is different from blocking and does not stop them seeing your profile and Posts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can people see which Stories I have liked?

No. Instagram says only the person who shared the Story can see your like. Story likes have no public count, and your followers and other viewers are not shown them.

Can I like an Instagram Story without the owner knowing?

Not with a normal view. Liking requires opening the Story while logged in, which puts your name in the viewer list, and the heart appears next to it. Instagram does not document whether interacting during Instagram Plus Story Preview reveals you, so do not rely on it.

Does a Story like show up in the owner’s DMs?

No. Instagram said at launch that Story likes are not sent as a DM. Replies and quick emoji reactions do go to messages, and Super Hearts are designed to stand out in the inbox.

Can I see who liked my Story after it expires from view?

Only while viewer data is available, which is up to 48 hours after posting, with hours 24 to 48 reached through your Archive. After that, the named list and its hearts are no longer available. Story Insights for public accounts show numbers only, never names.

Is there a like count on my own Story?

Instagram says Story likes have no public counts, and it does not document a separate like total for the poster. What the owner gets is the viewer list, with a heart beside each person who liked the Story. To see who liked it, scan the names in that list while it is still available.
